Pressestimmen

a mammoth tale * BBC History Magazine * A must-read... eloquent, absorbing, absolutely fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable. * LoveReading * Stunning * Daily Express * Walters's skill and subtlety in portraying the suffering and disarray of a feudal society in which disease rampages and God has seemingly gone mad is masterly. And, as with her bestselling suspense novels, the psychological drama is gripping. * Elizabeth Buchan, Daily Mail, praise for The Last Hours * A vividly-wrought and powerful story. With The Last Hours, Minette Walters has brought her impressive skill as a writer of psychological crime to create a dark and gripping depiction of Medieval England in the jaws of the Black Death. * Elizabeth Fremantle on The Last Hours * Atmosphere, imagination and narrative power of which few other writers are capable * The Times * An enthralling account of a calamitous time, and above all a wonderful testimony to the strength of the human spirit. I was caught from the first page. * Julian Fellowes on The Last Hours * Wonderful and sweeping, with a fabulous sense of place and history * Kate Mosse on The Last Hours *

What a great book! What a great story! I would love to read a #3 of Develish...

.... aber nicht hervorragend. Bestimmt nicht M.Walters bestes Buch, aber lesenswert. Der erste Band hat mir vielleicht doch noch ein bisschen besser gefallen. Durchaus eine Leseempfehlung von mir

I waited with some impatience for this second part to the story. I was, I’m afraid, left quite dissatisfied. It was still full of detail, of careful character continuation, but it felt like a padded out 1/3 of the last book. It could have been condensed and added to to first book ( which was excellent). Minette Walters is a great author, but I get the feeling she was asked to churn this out, nothing really happened, no one really did anything of great import, no one significant was born or died. There was a lot of to-ing, and fro-ing and at one point near the end of the book, suddenly, out of nowhere, dialects appear. Confusing. Their sudden and “necessary” appearance, not the dialect. I feel I have to apologise, given that the first was SO good and this was disappointing - and quite obviously a trailer for a third.. It was strangely emotionally devoid too. Weird. With a lot of repetition, yes, Lady Anne wanted the serfs to be free. yes, Lady Anne was a good kind lady. Yes, they kept everyone on the other side of the moat....see? Lots of filler. Ah well, let’s hope the third is like the first.

The story line maintains good tension and the book was a page turner for me. Especially fascinating was the background of the black plague as it ravished England at the time. The author provides insights into the life and beliefs of the people living in and around Dorseteshire in 1349. The dominant control of the church, the vested interest of the church and nobility to maintain the ignorance of the peasantry for economic exploitation is skilfully weaved into the story. It took the outbreak of the pestilence on a global scale to break the bonds of this exploitation.Going on to read: "The Black Death Transformed: Disease and Culture in Early Renaissance Europe (Arnold Publication)" to get a better understanding of the impact and spread of a global pandemic.

Great read and a good sequel . I was sad to leave the folk of Develish behind! I do hope that there might be room for another tale from Dorsetshire Minette weaves such a good story.

Excellent book. Not quite as good as the first volume but almost. Learned so much about the Middle Ages in the most interesting way.

Loved the first book Last Hours and just had to continue with the 2nd book. Excellent sequel and could see it going over to a third book. Interesting slice of what impact the plague had on England in the 1300's.
